In online gaming, every millisecond counts – and it all starts with your home network. For a gaming experience free from lag, packet loss and sudden disconnections, you need exactly three things: a high-performance router, a stable connection reaching every room, and a network that is reliably protected. With FRITZ!, gamers can find all of this from a single source. The FRITZ! flagship models are available for fast internet access: the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro for DSL and fibre-optic connections, and the new FRITZ!Box 6690 Pro for cable connections.  Those who play on the go can fill in dead spots in their home and garden with repeaters from the FRITZ! Mesh range, such as the FRITZ!Repeater 2700.
The upcoming FRITZ!OS 8.50 makes all the difference. It automatically recognises gaming traffic and gives it priority within the home network, just as it does for other real-time data streams, such as those from video conferences. The benefit becomes apparent precisely when things would otherwise get critical: even with large downloads or simultaneous streams in the home, the connection to the server remains stable. There’s no need to configure anything; the FRITZ!Box handles it in the background. In the user interface, you can see for each network device when prioritisation is taking place – with up to 24 hours’ retrospective data. FRITZ!OS 8.50 will be released shortly and, as usual, will be available free of charge. If you don’t want to wait, you can test the feature today with FRITZ! Lab.

Gaming hardware

The router is the nerve centre of the home network and is in constant communication with every connected device. At the same time, it forwards data to the internet and retrieves fresh data from there. Millions of pieces of information are sent every second, simply to synchronise one’s own position with that of fellow players. The FRITZ!Box is built for this: thanks to its powerful processing capabilities, it can handle a large number of simultaneous connections without breaking a sweat. This pays off in households where, in addition to consoles and gaming PCs, smartphones, televisions and smart home devices are also connected to the network.

For the most demanding requirements, two flagship models with Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 are available: the new FRITZ!Box 6690 Pro achieves speeds of up to 12.2 Gbit/s on a cable connection, whilst the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro delivers full performance of up to 18.4 Gbit/s on DSL and fibre-optic connections. Wi-Fi 7 brings one thing above all else: more headroom. Three radio bands and wider channels ensure that the connection remains stable even when many devices in the home are transmitting simultaneously – precisely the situation in which ping times would otherwise rise. Those who access the internet on the move can use the FRITZ!Box 6860 5G even in places where there is no fixed-line connection.

Wired or Wi-Fi?

Wired beats wireless – at least when every millisecond counts. A wired connection delivers consistently low latency and virtually no jitter, because the signal doesn’t have to find its way through walls and doesn’t have to share the frequency with anyone else. All FRITZ!Box models feature several Ethernet ports with at least Gigabit-class speeds; the latest models come with at least one 2.5 Gbit/s port. When connected to a fibre-optic line, FRITZ!Box models without an integrated modem even offer a 10 Gbit/s port for XGS-PON. For that evening’s ranked session, this is your safest bet.

If you can’t or aren’t allowed to lay cables, FRITZ!Mesh and FRITZ!Powerline offer two good alternatives: Powerline transmits data via the mains, whilst the FRITZ!Repeater uses a wireless signal. FRITZ!Repeaters are the hassle-free solution, particularly for casual gamers who play from the sofa, the loft or the garden table. The FRITZ!Repeater 2700 and the FRITZ!Repeater 6000 reliably deliver the signal to remote rooms. If you want to cover your entire home in one go, opt for the FRITZ!Mesh Set 2700, available as either a two- or three-pack. With FRITZ!Mesh, all components automatically integrate to form a unified home network that can be controlled centrally via the FRITZ!Box.

FRITZ!OS: Built for Performance

FRITZ!OS is FRITZ!’s operating system and offers numerous settings that boost performance: it’s worth taking a look at the ports to be opened, as well as prioritising the connection between the router and your console or PC. You can also limit the bandwidth for the guest Wi-Fi network to ensure there’s enough speed left over for gaming.

Setup is seamless and takes only a few minutes: the FRITZ!Box guides you step by step through the installation, whilst repeaters and mesh components connect at the touch of a button. Spending less time configuring means more time playing. And if you want to know what’s happening on your own network, the user interface and the FRITZ!Apps let you keep track at all times of which devices are connected, how strong the signal is, and which connection is currently being prioritised. Thanks to the free FRITZ!OS updates, the FRITZ!Box is provided with security updates and new features for many years to come.

Play safely – protection included

Gaming accounts are a popular target for attacks. FRITZ! products protect both your connection and your gaming experience out of the box: with a built-in firewall, encrypted Wi-Fi using the latest standard, a completely separate guest network for visitors, and regular, free security updates via FRITZ!OS. This protection is active straight out of the box and doesn’t need to be set up.

Join in the fun: the FRITZ! Jump’n’Run

To bring the experience to life, FRITZ! has launched its very own jump’n’run game: across three levels, you’ll have to navigate your way past obstacles, dead spots and sources of interference. It’s a game that also demonstrates what really matters in a home network. You can play it directly in your browser at https://fritz.com/collections/gaming-2026, with no installation required.
